About Us

Born in 1897, Joseph Stein grew up in Yonkers, New York, where his parents had settled after immigrating to the U.S. from Eastern Europe. Joe worked as a tailor and studied dentistry at New York University. Upon graduating, he started a menswear retail business called Stein’s, with the motto America’s Greatest Clothiers. Stein’s became one of the largest menswear retailers in America, with 91 stores, before being acquired by Richman Brothers in 1959. Joseph used his fortune to fund schools, synagogues, and cancer research. Over this period, he became close with Albert Einstein (pictured together below), who frequently wore Stein’s suits. The Joseph F. Stein Family foundation exists to carry out his legacy, values, and dedication to philanthropy.
